Self-determination theory
Self-determination theory is a psychological motivation theory that explains the conditions under which intrinsic motivation, well-being, and sustainable engagement arise.
The theory states that three fundamental psychological basic needs determine the quality of motivation:
Autonomy
Competence
Connectedness
When these needs are met, autonomous motivation arises.
When they become frustrated, motivation shifts towards controlled forms or demotivation.
Deepening
Self-Determination Theory, known internationally as Self-Determination Theory, was developed within motivational psychology and has been extensively researched empirically.
The theory distinguishes between different forms of motivation quality:
Autonomous motivation, where behavior is experienced as voluntary and meaningful.
Controlled motivation, where behavior arises from pressure, obligation, or external reward.
The central premise is that motivation is not a quantity, but a quality.
The social context plays a decisive role in this.
Leadership, structure, and relational safety directly influence the extent to which basic needs are supported or frustrated.
Self-determination theory focuses primarily on motivation and well-being.
She describes conditions for healthy motivation, but does not fully explain how meaning-making and defense mechanisms guide behavior over time.
Relationship to INR
Within the INR Model framework, Self-Determination Theory forms the scientific foundation of Inner Needs.
INR regards basic needs as the fundamental structure of human functioning.
Where Self-Determination Theory stops at the quality of motivation, INR goes further by:
- Adding narrative as a layer of meaning
– Explicitly define reaction as a behavioral layer
Integrate the protective system as a dynamic link
Self-determination theory explains when motivation is healthy.
INR explains how behavior arises logically when the quality of motivation is under pressure.
The theory is therefore not an alternative to INR, but rather a building block within behavioral architecture.
