Push communication

Push communication refers to a communication style where influence is exerted by directing, correcting, persuading, or steering from one's own perspective. The emphasis is on broadcasting rather than exploring.

Push communication attempts to change behavior through pressure or direction.

Deepening

Push communication often arises from good intentions. Someone sees what can be improved and tries to convey that.

The focus is on:

Explain

Correct

Advise

Solve

Steering

However, within the INR framework, push communication often triggers a defensive response. When someone feels corrected or controlled, their autonomy, competence, or sense of connection can come under pressure. This leads to a Reaction.

Push communication can force movement in the short term, but often reinforces defensive patterns in the long term.

Important distinction:

Push isn't inherently wrong. It's a style that can be functional in clear hierarchical or urgent situations. Within development contexts, however, it often backfires.

Relationship to INR

Within the INR Model framework, “push communication” is understood as an intervention style that directly addresses behavior without first examining Narrative and Inner Needs.

This can cause push communication to unintentionally strengthen rather than reduce protection.

INR Dynamics identifies "push" as the reflexive communication style that arises under stress. The model encourages us to recognize this reflex before taking action.
